Betsy Wood KnappBETSY WOOD KNAPP
Entrepreneur, Angel Investor, Philanthropist

Director, Knapp Family Foundation

As an entrepreneur, she founded (or co-founded) companies providing technology-based services, video learning programs, TV shows and cookbooks and new media products/innovations. As an angel-investor, she supports new technology start-ups and is part of an informal network of investors who support emerging companies. As a philanthropist, she is actively engaged with her alma-mater, Wellesley College, UCLA and the Knapp Foundation in grant-making and fund raising for a variety of charitable organizations.

At UCLA, she is the first woman elected to Chair the Board of Directors of the UCLA Foundation (2008 – 2010).  The UCLA Foundation manages over $1 billion in privately endowed funds and actively promotes philanthropy for the benefit of UCLA. She is now “Immediate Past Chair” of the Foundation and continues to serve on the Investment Management and Nominations Committees.  Also at UCLA, she serves on the Chancellor’s Competitiveness Council and was a member of the Chancellor’s Campaign Cabinet in the previous UCLA campaign for $3.2 billion.  She also serves on the Board of Visitors Executive Committee at UCLA Anderson.

At Wellesley College, she is in her 15th and final year as a Trustee (term limits).  She co-Chaired a comprehensive (capital) campaign that raised $475 million, a record among private liberal arts colleges, in 2005. She Chaired the Trustee Development Committee (4 years) which is responsible for oversight of all private fundraising.

Through the Knapp Foundation, Betsy and Bud Knapp have made many gifts and grants which reflect their interest in supporting the arts, education and medical research.  Some examples are the Betsy Wood Knapp Center for Media and Technology and the Knapp Social Science Center at Wellesley. At UCLA Anderson School of Management, she has endowed a Chair in Innovation and Creativity; is a co-creator of the KICK Conference for Women (KICK means ‘Knapp Innovation, Creativity and Knowledge’), and with her husband has endowed the Knapp New Venture Competition.  Betsy calls herself a “venture philanthropist,” as she embraces new ideas that reflect her technical expertise, but also open doors to creative new ventures.

Long a supporter of advancing women in business and the professions, Betsy is a founding member of several by-invitation women’s organizations:  Committee of 200, the Wellesley College Business Leadership Council, Women Corporate Directors and the International Women’s Forum.

Sheri BillerSHERI BILLER
Chairperson of the Board, City of Hope

President, The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation

Noted philanthropist and community leader Sheri Biller began a three-year term as the first-ever female chair of the City of Hope Board of Directors on July 1, 2010.  Ms. Biller joined City of Hope’s board in 2000 and most recently served as vice chair of the board and chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee.

Sheri and her husband Les founded The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation in 2001 with a commitment to actively serve and support Los Angeles-based programs in K-12 public education, theatre arts, career training and supportive care.

After losing two dear friends to breast cancer, Sheri recognized a systemic need for a fully-integrated supportive care facility for families and caregivers of patients that are dealing with life-threatening disease. She worked in partnership with City of Hope to create the Sheri & Les Biller Patient and Family Resource Center, which opened in 2008.  The center has piloted revolutionary SupportScreen technology which allows City of Hope’s health professionals to provide immediate, individualized care.

Sheri has served in leadership roles as an advisor on board development, and as board member for many non-profit organizations in Los Angeles, including the Kayne Eras Center, The Rape Foundation, Children’s Burn Foundation, and Center Theatre Group (CTG).  In 1999, she founded Center Theatre Group’s Corporate Circle, which has raised over $7 million for CTG’s renowned student theatre arts education program and reached over 315,000 public school students since its inception.

Before moving to Los Angeles in 1999, Sheri lived in Minneapolis and San Francisco, and spent 10 years in Europe living in Milan, Italy and London, England.  In Minneapolis, she founded and chaired the Ordway Circle of Stars, the volunteer organization of the Ordway Music Theatre in St. Paul, Minnesota.  The organization recently honored Sheri with the Ordway’s Education Award for Vision.
